What Documents Do You Need to Rent a Car in Georgia?

Quick answer

A passport (or national ID card) and a valid driving licence. For most travellers that’s all: no credit card, and on half our cars no deposit either. Whether you also need an International Driving Permit or a certified translation depends on where your licence was issued.

What every renter needs

  • Passport or national ID card

The rental company checks it when you collect the car.

  • A valid driving licence

Your own licence works in Georgia for up to a year from your last entry. No exchange, no local test.

  • Age 21+ and 3 years of driving

Some cars ask for 23 or 25, and the car page says so before you book.

  • No credit card

A small booking fee online through PayPal, which takes debit cards, and the rest at pickup: in cash on 83% of cars.

What Georgian law says

A visitor can drive in Georgia on a valid foreign licence for up to one year from their last entry into the country, and no Georgian law makes an International Driving Permit compulsory.

What the law does ask: if your licence isn’t written in Latin or Georgian letters, carry a certified translation of it. An IDP does the same job, since it’s an official translation in a standard format, and it only counts together with your original licence.

Do you need an IDP or a certified translation?

The law sets the minimum. Our partners ask for a little more, depending on where your licence was issued:

No IDP needed

  • Any European country
  • Russia
  • Ukraine
  • Israel
  • USA
  • Canada

IDP or certified translation

  • Arab countries: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others
  • Any country not in the first list

Not sure which list you’re on? Send a photo of your licence to us on WhatsApp before you book and we’ll tell you.

No IDP? It’s a one-day fix in Tbilisi

If you need a certified translation, you don’t have to arrange it before you fly. Translation bureaus in Tbilisi, such as LegalTranslation.ge or Targmanebi, translate the licence and have it certified by a notary, usually within one working day; some offer same-day service for a surcharge. Expect to pay roughly 55–110 GEL (about $20–40) in total.

An IDP is different: only the country that issued your licence can issue one, before you travel. You can’t get it in Georgia, so a local certified translation is the fallback.

Deposit and payment

222 of the 441 cars in our search (50%) need no deposit at all. Where one applies it’s most often $100–200, paid in cash at pickup and handed back when you return the car.

You never need a credit card: the booking fee goes through PayPal, and the balance is paid at pickup in cash, or by card where the car accepts one.

Pickup checklist

  • Passport or national ID card
  • Driving licence, plus an IDP or certified translation if your licence needs one
  • Booking confirmation
  • The car’s registration certificate (tech passport): the rental company provides it, so check it’s in the car before you drive off
  • Cash for the balance and any deposit, or a card where the car accepts one
