Deposits, Age Rules & Insurance for Premium Cars
This is the part that trips people up, so here it is straight.
Security Deposit
Everyday cars in Georgia sometimes skip deposits entirely. Premium cars don't: expect $300-700 blocked on a card (or in cash) for luxury sedans and SUVs, and more for AMG and exotic models. It comes back after the car returns clean, undamaged and free of traffic fines.
Age & Experience
Standard cars rent at 21 with a year of driving history. Luxury, sport and large-SUV categories typically require you to be 23-25 with two or more years behind the wheel. Under 25? Confirm the exact car's terms before you book.
Licence & IDP
A licence printed in Latin script works in Georgia for up to a year from entry. If yours uses Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic or an Asian script, bring an International Driving Permit, and honestly, an IDP smooths police checks for everyone.
Insurance & Excess
Third-party liability is mandatory and included, but on a $100,000+ car you want the full CDW. Read the deductible line: "included" coverage can still leave a four-figure excess on a premium vehicle.

Drive Yourself

Do You Need the Luxury SUV in the Mountains?
The famous drives are all comfortable in any premium sedan: the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi over the 2,379 m Jvari Pass, the Kakheti wine roads, the coastal run to Batumi. The SUV buys you confidence and clearance, not access.
Beyond the asphalt it flips. The Mestia-Ushguli track and the Abano Pass into Tusheti (around 2,900 m, no guardrails) demand a genuine high-clearance 4x4, and suppliers ban ordinary cars from them outright; driving one there anyway makes any damage 100% your problem.
